2007 Judges for the Hiawassee Festival of Art
Martha Bator was educated at Oglethorpe University, (B.A.), and she attended workshops in Finland, Yugoslavia, and the USA. She is affiliated with the Southeastern Pastel Society (SPS – VP), the Atlanta Artists Club (Member of Excellence), Pastel Society of America (PSA), DeKalb Council for the Arts, Knickerbocker Artists USA (KA), and the Plein Air Painters of Georgia. She is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, Southeastern Pastel Society, and the Knickerbocker Artists USA. She has had over 60 national and international awards and shows including three national “Best of Show” awards. She has had solo shows at Mercer University, Oglethorpe University Museum, Church of the Atonement, St. Edward’s Episcopal Church, Goodyear House and Cobb County Chamber of Commerce. She has also participated in two person shows at the Quinlan Visual Arts Center, DeKalb Community College, and Art Station – Kennesaw. She has been invited to invitational shows at Callaway Gardens Invitational, Art in Motion (GA Tech) and Art Station Invitational. Martha has won first prize at the Annual Heritage Fine Arts Competition, was included in a national slide lecture by Marilyn-Ann Woolwich, received recognition from the Georgia Secretary of State for “Achievement by Georgia Women in the Visual Arts” (1997), founded “Design Studio” in Kuwait, and designed and published the first street map in Kuwait (1976). Her gallery affiliation is Vista Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia and Heaven Blue Rose Gallery in Roswell, Georgia.
Debra Lynn Gold Debra is an artist and educator and holds an MFA from Indiana University in Jewelry Design and Silversmithing. Formerly the head of the Metals Department and Assistant Professor of Art at both East Tennessee State University and Illinois State University, she now resides in Atlanta where she continues teaching at The Art Institute of Atlanta, Georgia State University, and Chastain Arts Center. Debra also enjoys getting to the mountains where she has been a workshop leader at Arrowmont, John C. Campbell Folk School and Penland School. Debra maintains a metalsmithing studio, Debra Lynn Gold: Limited Editions. She is a seasoned artist and exhibitor at shows across the country. Debra has had her work shown as far away as Russia and Australia. Closer to home, it has been seen at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institute, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. Debra has received the prestigious Niche Award for excellence in design, and twice won the Hoover and Strong Award for Design in Precious Metal. Other honors include an Illinois Arts Council Grant to Individual Artists and inclusion in the permanent collections of The State of Georgia and the Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs. Debra was awarded Distinguished Membership in the Society of North American Goldsmiths. Additionally, she has juried many fine art and fine craft shows in the southeast. Debra looks forward to returning to Hiawassee this year as a juror and award judge.
SANDRA OLDS SEDEN Sandra Olds Seden was born in California. Moving to the South with her parents as a child and remaining in the area, she graduated from the Atlanta College of Art with a Professional Certificate in 1966 and a Bachelors of Fine Arts in 1969. Her work is included in important private collections throughout the southeast and she has shown in curated and invitational exhibits including: Vivesections & Other Slices of Life, a solo exhibition, David Kidd Gallery, Angels: Myth, Mirth and Majesty, an invitational exhibition, Trinity Gallery, and The Buford Show, a curated exhibition, Gwinnett Fine Arts Center. A co-founder of the Georgia Visual Arts Alliance as well as the Georgia Arts Network, Ms. Seden has been an advocate for the arts for over two decades. An organizer for the Pentimento 1991 exhibition in conjunction with the Gwinnett Council for the Arts, she also served as director of their Satellite Gallery at Gwinnett Place. Among the artists of the Progressive Artists Coalition and participant in the Buford Artists Colony for ten years when people came from around the Atlanta metro area to attend art parties (ala Andy Warhol) and to tour studios of working artists. These recurring events were inspirations for The Buford Bond at the Quinlan Art Center in Gainesville and The Buford Show at the Gwinnett Fine Arts Center. The “1st wave…” exhibition held at Tannery Row in 2006, was a reunion of the veteran Buford artists from that era. In 1993 she became an organizer and chairman of the Georgia Arts ’96 juried exhibition for the 1996 Olympics, sharing with the world the art and artists of our culture. Held within the Olympic ring, the location proved to be very successful for both the artists and the exhibit. As co-owner and co-director of Gallery 39 in Buford where she curated exhibitions, notably “The Pastel Artists: A Tribute to Lee Bomhoff, 1958-1998” and “Watercolors” exhibiting works from the entire southern region. Currently settled in Nicholson just 14 miles north of Athens, GA and retired from the Coca-Cola Company where she worked as a designer, she now devotes all of her time to painting, drawing, sculpting, and is currently creating a 3D computer animated short film based on a children’s book.
